Missed-Call Revenue Calculator for Home Services Companies

Every unanswered call to a home services company is a job that usually goes to whichever competitor picks up first. This free calculator shows what missed calls cost your business: enter how many calls you get each week, how many go unanswered, how often answered calls turn into booked jobs, and your average job value, and it works out the revenue walking out the door each month and each year.

How it works

How the calculator works

The math is deliberately simple, and every step is shown. The calculator takes five numbers, all of them yours:

  1. Calls per week — every inbound call: new customers, repeat customers, everyone.
  2. Percentage of calls missed — calls that ring out, hit voicemail, or arrive after hours with nobody to answer. If you don’t track this, the default (25%) is a reasonable starting point: published estimates for home services range from about 14% to 28% of calls going unanswered (sources listed at the bottom of this page).
  3. Booking rate — of the calls you do answer, what share become booked jobs? The calculator assumes your missed callers would have booked at the same rate. That is the fairest assumption available, and you can lower it if you believe missed callers are less serious.
  4. Average job value — your typical invoice, not your biggest job.
  5. Weeks worked per year — so seasonal businesses aren’t charged for weeks they don’t work.

The formula

The formula, in plain language

Missed calls per week = calls per week × missed-call percentage

Jobs lost per week = missed calls per week × booking rate

Revenue lost per year = jobs lost per week × average job value × weeks worked per year

Revenue lost per month = revenue lost per year ÷ 12

Nothing is hidden. If you change any input, the result changes by exactly this math and nothing else.

What it means

What your number means

If your monthly loss is smaller than one job’s value, your phones are in decent shape, and your time is better spent on the calls you already answer — faster callbacks and a tighter booking process.

If your monthly loss would cover a part-time dispatcher or an answering service, that’s the comparison to make. The fix doesn’t have to be a hire: a missed-call text-back, a call-forwarding rule for after hours, or a simple callback routine within the hour all recover part of this number.

If your annual loss is in the tens of thousands, look first at when calls are missed. For most trades businesses the leaks are predictable: before 9 a.m., after 5 p.m., lunch hours, and the days the whole crew is on site. CallRail’s 2025 consumer survey found that 82% of consumers say they will call a competitor when a business doesn’t answer — which is why a missed call is rarely a delayed job. It’s usually a lost one.

One more thing worth checking: marketing makes this number bigger, not smaller. Every dollar spent on Google Ads management in Ottawa, truck wraps, and yard signs buys phone calls. A call you paid for and didn’t answer is the most expensive call of all.

Assumptions

Assumptions and honesty notes

  • This calculator produces estimates, not guarantees. It cannot know your real booking rate or job mix — that’s why every input is adjustable and the defaults are labelled.
  • The 25% default missed-call rate is a planning figure drawn from published research (see Sources). Your real rate may be lower or higher; your phone system or call-tracking software can tell you exactly.
  • The calculator assumes missed callers would book at the same rate as answered callers. Some missed callers are existing customers who will call back; some are price shoppers. Adjust the booking rate down if you want a conservative figure.
  • Revenue lost is gross revenue, before your costs of doing the work. It is the size of the opportunity, not a profit figure.

This is an estimate, not a guarantee.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many calls do home services businesses actually miss?

Published estimates vary by study. CallRail’s small-business benchmark puts the home services missed-call rate at about 14%; an analysis of more than 60 million calls found 27% of inbound calls to home services businesses go unanswered; and CallRail has reported 28% of calls going unanswered across 225,000+ businesses. This calculator’s 25% default sits inside that published range — replace it with your own tracked number if you have one.

Why assume missed callers would book at the same rate as answered callers?

Because there’s no honest way to know otherwise, and the assumption is stated openly so you can change it. If you believe half your missed callers are existing customers who call back anyway, cut the booking rate in half and use that result — the calculator is a planning tool, not a verdict.

What’s the fastest way to reduce missed calls?

Start with coverage, not technology: forward calls to a second phone after hours, return every missed call within the hour, and turn on missed-call text-back if your phone system offers it. Then measure your real missed-call rate for a month so you know whether the fix worked.

Does this calculator store or send my numbers?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is transmitted, saved, or used for marketing.

Can Ivory Circuit help me recover this revenue?

Yes — this is exactly the kind of leak our free Growth Audit looks for. We review how your business shows up on Google, how your calls and enquiries are handled, and where bookings are being lost, then give you a straight answer on what to fix first. Call (613) 366-4549, Monday to Friday, 9–5 EST.
